Who's IDEA is this?

Your rights as a parent: decoding the legal-ease

If your student has a disability (or is suspected of having a disability) that effects his or her ability to learn and participate in the regular classroom, then he or she is able to receive specialized instruction or accommodations to best meet their learning needs.

Along with these specialized services come a lot of rules, regulations, and terminology that may be new or confusing to sift through, let alone understand.

Have no fear! There is a document, and while rather dry, it is helpful!

Who's IDEA is this? A Parent's Guide to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act

The state Board of Education has taken the process of special education and broken it down in to understandable pieces and parts. It outlines exactly what your rights are as a parent and what your child's rights are. This document also explains who is responsible for what and the timelines for when the steps of the process must be completed. Common questions are organized by topic and answered in a straightforward manner, outlining what the rules are and any possible exceptions to those rules.

This helpful document must be provided to you when your child begins the process of being considered for special education services and can also be viewed online here  at anytime.
