Who is a School Psychologist?

School psychologists are members of school teams that work to support students and teachers. They have training in mental health, behavior, and learning that can be applied to help students succeed in all areas of their education.
Education and training to become a school psychologist:
  • Specialist level degree program resulting in a Master of Science degree (MS) and certification as an Educational Specialist (EdS)
  • or may have completed a doctoral degree resulting in either a Doctor Psychology degree (PsyD) or a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)
  • may have other areas of specialization, such as behavior or specific disability categories

What does a School Psychologist Do?


School psychologists work with students, teachers, parents, administrators, and other professionals involved in the schools to provide support for students and families, support for learners with different needs, improve academic achievement, and work towards positive behavior and a positive school environment.

Some specific services provided by school psychologists include:
  • conducting psychological and academic assessment
  • developing individualized instruction and implementation plans
  • modifying and adapting curriculum and instruction for different learners 
  • monitoring student progress
  • assisting with managing student behavior 
  • helping coordinate other community services and/or services provided in school 
  • providing culturally appropriate services for students with diverse backgrounds
