Behavior Intervention - Points for Grumpy

This intervention is designed for the student who is argumentative, verbally defiant and non-compliant with teacher instructions.

Points For Grumpy

This intervention is based on response cost, or the student losing tokens/points based on engaging in the targeted behavior(s). At specific intervals the tokens/points remaining are rewarded to the student. The positive tokens/points the student has earned can then be exchanged for rewards based on the system you establish.

To implement this intervention:
1. Work with the student to establish a menu of preferred rewards
2. Explain how the program will work

  • starting out with 10 positive behavior tokens/coins/points
  • each time the student is verbally defiant or non-compliant a point will go in 'Grumpy's' can
  • when the time limit is up the student will earn all of the remaining positive tokens/coins/points and can cash the points in for rewards
Example of  a student
jar for positive points
3. Review with student what behavior is expected in class and what they can do to keep the positive behavior points. Review what behavior is unexpected in class and give specific examples of behaviors that will lead to points going into Grumpy's can.

4. Record positive points earned at the end of each interval and/or total positive points earned for the day

More information and an example of a chart to use for tracking student points can be found here
